Mahogany grows only in tropical locales and therefore is imported. Because of its quality and appearance, it is among the most beautiful of the hardwoods and is solid, heavy and durable.
Mahogany furniture is often passed down through generations because of its timeless beauty and durability. The dark wood can also look especially inviting on headboards, tables, chairs and other fine home furnishings.
Shaker style furniture is characterized by clean lines, tapered legs, and minimalist designs. It’s known for being practical and simple down to the very last detail. Originally designed in the late 1700’s by followers of the religious group the Shaking Quakers, shaker furniture has become a staple in interior design known for being timeless and elegant.
With this build I was able to combine the simplicity of a shaker design and the timeless quality of mahogany. Built entirely with solid mahogany, each legs is joined to the aprons with hardwood dowels. The top was edge glued and dowled to provide rigidity.
The finish used was Waterlox Original Sealer. I hand applied three coats, waiting 24hrs in-between each coat. Once cured to the touch, I hand buffed the entire piece with paste wax to lower the sheen and give all parts a glass like touch.
